“All power is within you; you can do anything and everything”. — Swami Vivekananda

Having been inspired by the afore-mentioned maxim of Swami Vivekananda, Babu Sri Biswambhar Dinda wanted to perpetuate the memory of his only son ‘PRABHAT KUMAR’, whose premature death left him wretched and broken-hearted, through the establishment of a college to be named after his son. Consequently, our Prabhat Kumar College, came into being on the 15th July, 1926 with a princely donation from the broken-hearted father, and many others including Rai Saheb Gangadhar Nanda of Mugberia.

Initially, the college began its pilgrimage with only 39 pupils in the building complex of Contai High School, the oldest H. S. School of Purba Medinipur District as an Arts College under the University of Calcutta. After a decade, founder Principal Nepal Chandra Roy purchased a plot of land of about 5.7 acres with a moderate Building from the American Baptist Bengal-Mission at a very moderate price of Rs.3700.00, and the college was shifted on 26th August 1937 to its present location.

After the death of Babu Biswambhar Dinda, a trust formed after his name “The Biswambhar Dinda Trust (B. D. Trust) built up “Biswambhar Hall”, the first construction made for the college. Subsequently, about 50 Bighas of land either by purchase or by acquisition came into the possession of the college authority. Now, the College is of Government Aided College.

Message

“ Gender equality is more than a goal in itself. It is a precondition for meeting the challenge of reducing poverty, promoting sustainable development, and building good governance ” - Kofi Annan

With the rotating passage of the wheel of time, the college has evolved and developed as a full-fledged multi-disciplinary Co-Ed college with a roll strength of about 7000 students.

This magnanimous evolution is the fruit of cumulative factors comprising the infrastructure, teaching pedagogy, managerial discipline, the unshakable spirit of the faculty members, non-teaching staff and students for the cause of education, the untiring endeavours of its management, effective alumni and other stakeholders who have showered their abiding love for this old college. Hence, at the outset of my message, how can forget to extend my heartfelt thanks to the good and gracious selves of all the stakeholders associated with the institution?

I fervently look forward to contributing to all stakeholders of the institution through excellence in education and research to serve as a priceless resource for society; and remain a source of pride for all concerned.

Dear students, it is my message to you all that people of fine character live by their values. They are honest and are committed to truthfulness, word and deed. The true character thus encompasses the capacity for self-discipline. Character creates self-respect, which in turn leads to high self-esteem.

I thank you for your interest in this exceptional institution which has recorded more than ninety-seven years of constant development, in the course of which it has accomplished much, making it one of the colleges recognized for its excellence and therefore, much sought after by the fresh applicants.

The Prabhat Kumar College tradition happily brings together sound academic achievement with an extensive, vibrant co-curricular programme that includes sports, and leadership training programmes. Our mission is to inculcate the love of knowledge in our students and, for this, we aim to develop the skills and values of lifelong ‘learning,’ essential for making responsible global citizens. This will make them immensely capable of facing the future with resilience and optimism. On a deeper level, we try to instil the values of respect and trust in relationships that are the foundation of real success. Our Governing Body, students, teachers, non-teaching staff, and respected guardians are the main pillars in strengthening the basis of education for all round and sustainable development.

At our college, we believe that ‘education’ is a wholesome, holistic exercise and as such we strive to give a whole new meaning to the word. Coupling this basic premise with the idea of a sense of belonging to one family—the Prabhat Kumar College family—we look at ourselves as ‘caregivers.’ We care for the mind—ours is a sterling academic institution; we care for the person—the accent is on the all-around development of personality. I wish you the best in the process of seeking to become a part of this family.
